Dilution and Stock Solutions (C1V1)

Dilution by C1 × Q1 = C2 × Q2: give any three of stock strength, stock quantity, final strength and final quantity.

Example

Stock strength
1000
Stock strength unit
ratio 1:X (enter X)
Final strength
10000
Final strength unit
ratio 1:X (enter X)
Final quantity
100

Result: Stock needed: 10 mL.

The tool opens with these values already filled in. Replace them with your own.

What you enter

  • Stock strength (for a ratio 1:X, give X)
  • Stock strength unit
  • Stock quantity (mL, or g for % w/w)
  • Final strength (for a ratio 1:X, give X)
  • Final strength unit
  • Final quantity (mL, or g for % w/w)
  • Specific gravity of the stock (only for a % w/w stock made into a weight-in-volume product)
How this is calculated

Citation

Arithmetic identity: the amount of solute does not change on dilution, so C1 × Q1 = C2 × Q2 once both strengths are in one unit. No source beyond the definitions is needed.
