Serial Dilution Plan

Serial dilution plan from a stock strength to a target: the steps, each transfer and the strength after each.

Example

Strength unit, the same for the stock and the target
mg/mL
Stock strength
100
Target strength
0.03
Volume wanted at the last step
10 mL
Dilution factor per step
10

Result: 4 steps from 100 mg/mL to 0.03 mg/mL.

The tool opens with these values already filled in. Replace them with your own.

What you enter

  • Strength unit, the same for the stock and the target
  • Stock strength
  • Target strength
  • Volume wanted at the last step
  • Dilution factor per step (give this or the smallest measurable volume, not both)
  • Smallest volume that can be measured
  • Volume of each earlier step (blank uses the last step's volume)
How this is calculated

Citation

Arithmetic identity (repeated dilution): each step divides the strength by its factor, and the step factors multiply to stock ÷ target. No source beyond the definition is needed.
