Reduce or Enlarge a Master Formula

Reduce or enlarge a master formula to a wanted yield, or to a wanted quantity of one ingredient.

Open the tool → Runs in your browser. Data leaves only if you deliberately send a problem report from the interactive tool.

Example

Master formula, one ingredient per line
Hydrocortisone, 1, g Glycerin, 5, g White petrolatum, qs, g
Yield of the master formula
100
Unit of the yield
g
Yield wanted
30

Result: Factor 0.3: 3 ingredients scaled to 30 g.

The tool opens with these values already filled in. Replace them with your own.

What you enter

  • Master formula, one ingredient per line: name, quantity, unit (the quantity may be "qs"; the unit may be "parts")
  • Yield of the master formula (not needed for a formula in parts)
  • Unit of the yield
  • Yield wanted (give this, or one ingredient and its wanted quantity)
  • Or: the ingredient to scale by, as written in the formula
  • Quantity of that ingredient wanted, in its own unit
How this is calculated

Citation

Arithmetic identity (proportion): every quantity × wanted yield ÷ master yield. A formula in parts becomes fractions of the total; a qs line is the yield less everything else when the units agree.
