What the result means
- Category 5
- Any ONE of taller-than-wide shape, irregular margins, microcalcifications or marked hypoechogenicity - whatever else the nodule looks like. FNA above 10 mm.
- Category 4
- Ovoid, smooth, mildly hypoechoic, no high-risk feature. FNA above 15 mm.
- Category 3
- Ovoid, smooth, iso- or hyperechoic, no high-risk feature. FNA above 20 mm.
- Category 2
- Pure cyst or entirely spongiform. Benign; FNA not indicated on ultrasound grounds however large.
- Scope
- Reports a category and its size rule. Does not read images; a needle decision also weighs clinical risk, lymph nodes and patient preference.
