What the result means
- Stage 0
- Normal chest radiograph. Does not exclude sarcoidosis, including extrathoracic disease.
- Stage I
- Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy with clear lung fields.
- Stage II
- Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy together with parenchymal infiltrates.
- Stage III
- Parenchymal infiltrates without hilar lymphadenopathy. Defined by the absence of the adenopathy, so it is not stage II plus more.
- Stage IV
- Fibrosis. Where readers draw the III to IV line depends on whether fibrosis means any concern for it or end-stage change.
- Not a scale
- The stages are not a severity scale, not a sequence, and correlate poorly with functional parameters.
