What the result means
- PH
- Mean pulmonary arterial pressure above 20 mmHg at rest. Strictly above: exactly 20 is not pulmonary hypertension.
- Pre-capillary
- Wedge pressure at or below 15 mmHg with a pulmonary vascular resistance above 2 Wood units.
- Isolated post-capillary
- Wedge pressure above 15 mmHg with a resistance at or below 2 Wood units.
- Combined
- Wedge pressure above 15 mmHg with a resistance above 2 Wood units.
- Unclassified
- Wedge pressure at or below 15 mmHg with a resistance at or below 2 Wood units.
- What 2022 changed
- Both thresholds fell. Mean pressure from 25 or more to above 20, and the resistance cut from above 3 Wood units to above 2, which also became mandatory rather than supporting.
- Why staleness bites
- Old figures under-call twice: a mean pressure of 22 reads normal, and a raised wedge with a resistance of 2.5 reads isolated post-capillary where it is now combined.
- Resistance
- Computed as mean pressure minus wedge pressure, divided by cardiac output in liters per minute.
