What this is
Sophie Well accepts fractional packs (e.g., half a pack = 0.5) and returns the integer pack-year total used in lung-cancer screening eligibility, COPD risk stratification, and surgical pre-op assessment.
When to use it
Use this when documenting a smoking history in a primary-care visit, when screening eligibility for low-dose chest CT (USPSTF 2021: age 50-80 with >=20 pack-years and current or recent smoking), or when explaining cumulative exposure to a patient. Pack-years measure cigarettes only; cigar, pipe, vape, and cannabis exposure are documented separately.
How this is calculated
Standard tobacco-history measure: pack-years = packs per day x years smoked.
