What the result means
- Respiratory 0-8
- Scored from the SpO2 to FiO2 ratio only when intubated: 0 if not intubated or ratio 300 or above, 2 below 300, 4 below 200, 6 below 150, 8 below 100.
- Cardiovascular 0-4
- From the number of inotropes and systemic steroid treatment: 0 neither, 1 steroids only, 2 one inotrope, 3 two or more inotropes or one plus steroids, 4 two or more plus steroids.
- Hematologic 0-3
- Platelets 150 or above 0, 100 to 149 1, below 100 2, below 50 3. The rows overlap as published, so the highest matching value applies.
- Blind spot
- A non-intubated infant scores 0 respiratory however much oxygen they are receiving. There is no not-intubated-on-oxygen row in the published table.
- Population
- Derived and validated for mortality from late-onset sepsis in preterm very-low-birth-weight infants. It does not diagnose sepsis.
