Drip Rate Calculator

Drip Rate Calculator - a deterministic tool in Sophie Well's Medication & Infusion group.

What this is

Convert a volume (mL) and duration (min) into both a pump rate (mL/hr) and a gravity-drop rate (gtts/min) for a given tubing drop factor. Sophie Well shows both values so the same calculation works whether you have a pump or a gravity set. Drop factors of 10, 15, 20, and 60 (microdrip) cover the common tubing.

When to use it

Use this at any bedside infusion that does not have its own protocol-defined pump program: maintenance fluids, intermittent antibiotics, blood-product timing, gravity-set field infusions. For weight-based or concentration-based infusions, see the Weight-Based Dose and Concentration-to-Rate tiles.

References

Standard infusion arithmetic: rate (mL/hr) = volume * 60 / duration; gtts/min = volume * drop factor / duration.

Worked example: 125 mL/hr; 31 gtts/min
