What the result means
- I–VI
- I normal healthy; II mild systemic disease; III severe systemic disease; IV severe disease, constant threat to life; V moribund, will not survive without the operation; VI brain-dead organ donor.
- E modifier
- Appended for an emergency (a delay would significantly increase the threat to life or body part); not assignable to ASA I or VI. ASA-PS describes physical status, not operative risk.
