SIRS Criteria (with Sepsis-3 context)

SIRS criteria (Bone 1992): temperature > 38 or < 36 C, HR > 90, RR > 20 or PaCO2 < 32, WBC > 12 or < 4 or > 10% bands; >= 2 of 4 is SIRS-positive.

Example

Temperature > 38 C or < 36 C
Yes
Heart rate > 90 bpm
Yes
RR > 20/min or PaCO2 < 32 mmHg
Yes
WBC > 12 or < 4 (x10^9/L) or > 10% bands
No

Result: SIRS-positive (3 of 4 criteria) per Bone 1992. Sepsis-3 (Singer 2016) deprecated SIRS for sepsis screening in favor of qSOFA / SOFA.

What the result means

0-1 of 4
SIRS-negative per Bone 1992.
>=2 of 4
SIRS-positive per Bone 1992. Sepsis-3 (Singer 2016) replaced SIRS with qSOFA / SOFA for sepsis screening.
