What the result means
- Scale
- Three items over 24 hours, each 1 to 5. Total 3 to 15. THERE IS NO ZERO: 3 means no symptoms at all.
- 6 or less
- Mild nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.
- 7 to 12
- Moderate.
- 13 or more
- Severe.
- Label divergence
- At a total of 3 only: some renderings call it "no NVP" rather than mild. The 7 and 13 boundaries never differ.
- Well-being
- The 0 to 10 item is NOT part of the total and runs the opposite way: higher is better.
- Scope
- Symptom severity, not a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum and not a treatment indication.

Full field descriptions
- In the last 24 hours, for how long have you felt nauseated or sick to your stomach? NOTE THE MINIMUM IS 1, NOT 0 [1 = Not at all; 2 = 1 hour or less; 3 = 2 to 3 hours; 4 = 4 to 6 hours; 5 = More than 6 hours]
- In the last 24 hours, how many times have you vomited or thrown up? NOTE THE MINIMUM IS 1, NOT 0 [1 = Not at all; 2 = 1 to 2 times; 3 = 3 to 4 times; 4 = 5 to 6 times; 5 = 7 or more times]
- In the last 24 hours, how many times have you had retching or dry heaves without bringing anything up? NOTE THE MINIMUM IS 1, NOT 0 [1 = Not at all; 2 = 1 to 2 times; 3 = 3 to 4 times; 4 = 5 to 6 times; 5 = 7 or more times]
- Optional, NEVER SUMMED. The patient rating of her own well-being from 0, the worst possible, to 10, as good as she felt before pregnancy. It is NOT part of the total and runs in the OPPOSITE direction to the score: higher is better here, while a higher PUQE score is worse.
