PROTECHT Score (Cancer-Associated VTE Risk)

PROTECHT score (Verso 2012): cancer site plus thrombocytosis, anemia/ESA use, leukocytosis, high BMI, and platinum or gemcitabine chemotherapy give a score banding cancer-associated VTE risk (≥ 3 high).

Example

Cancer site
Very high risk: stomach, pancreas (2)
Platelets ≥ 350 ×10⁹/L
Yes
Hemoglobin < 10 g/dL or ESA use
No
Leukocytes > 11 ×10⁹/L
No
BMI ≥ 35 kg/m²
No
Platinum-based chemotherapy
Yes
Gemcitabine chemotherapy
No

Result: PROTECHT score 4 — high VTE risk (>= 3).

What the result means

0-2
Low-intermediate cancer-associated VTE risk.
>= 3
High risk. Khorana base plus platinum and gemcitabine chemotherapy points. Not a thromboprophylaxis order.
