What the result means
- Step 1
- A radiologist classifies morphology: class 1 typical, or class 2A/2B atypical. Not computable.
- Class 2
- TERMINAL. Atypical patients get NO 1A-1E subclass; the classification does not risk-stratify them.
- Step 2
- Class 1 only: rate = 100 x ((htTKV/150)^(1/age) - 1), htTKV = TKV mL / height m, both kidneys.
- 1A
- Growth below 1.5 percent per year.
- 1B
- 1.5 to under 3 percent.
- 1C
- 3 to under 4.5 percent.
- 1D
- 4.5 to 6 percent inclusive.
- 1E
- Above 6 percent.
- Age floor
- NOT validated below 15. Age sits in a denominator inside an exponent.

- Imaging morphology class, a RADIOLOGIST'S DESCRIPTOR that cannot be inferred from the numbers. Class 2 receives no subclass at all [1 = Bilateral and diffuse distribution, with mild, moderate or severe replacement of kidney tissue by cysts, where all cysts contribute similarly to total kidney volume. 2A = Unilateral, segmental, asymmetric or lopsided presentation. 2B = Bilateral presentation with acquired unilateral atrophy, or bilateral kidney atrophy.]
- Total kidney volume in mL, BOTH KIDNEYS SUMMED. Required for class 1; not used for class 2.
- Patient height in METERS (not cm). Required for class 1. The volume is divided by this to give the height-adjusted volume.
- Patient age in years. Required for class 1, and must be at least 15: the model is not validated below that and age sits in a denominator inside an exponent.
- Optional. How the volume was measured. Recorded but NOT used in the arithmetic; the ellipsoid method overestimates stereologic volume by about 5.3 percent on average, enough to shift a subclass [stereologic = Stereologic (planimetric) measurement; ellipsoid = Ellipsoid equation: pi/6 x length x width x depth]
