What this is
Compute the three body-size estimates clinicians actually dose against: ideal body weight (Devine formula - 50 / 45.5 kg for the first 60 inches plus 2.3 kg per inch over), adjusted body weight (IBW + 0.4 * (ABW - IBW)) for obese dosing of hydrophilic drugs, and body surface area (Mosteller: sqrt(height_cm * weight_kg / 3600)). Sophie Well returns all three from a single height / weight / sex input set with the formulas labeled inline.
When to use it
Use this when dosing weight-banded drugs that traditionally use IBW (aminoglycosides, theophylline, propofol induction) or adjusted body weight (vancomycin in obese patients, some chemotherapy), or when a BSA-based dose (chemotherapy, some pediatric oncology, cardiac index) is needed. The Devine formula is sex-specific and undefined below 60 inches; for short adults, use actual body weight or one of the variants noted in the citation block. BSA is independent of the IBW pathway.
How this is calculated
Devine 1974 (IBW); 0.4 AdjBW rule; Mosteller NEJM 1987;317:1098; Du Bois 1916 (reprinted in Nutrition 1989;5:303-311). Read the sources: Mosteller 1987 ↗, Du Bois 1916 (reprint) ↗
