Example
- Systolic pressure
- 135 mmHg
- Diastolic pressure
- 95 mmHg
Result: Stage 2 hypertension
The tool opens with these values already filled in. Replace them with your own.
What the result means
- Normal
- Systolic under 120 mmHg AND diastolic under 80 mmHg.
- Elevated
- Systolic 120 to 129 mmHg AND diastolic under 80 mmHg.
- Stage 1 hypertension
- Systolic 130 to 139 mmHg OR diastolic 80 to 89 mmHg.
- Stage 2 hypertension
- Systolic 140 mmHg or more OR diastolic 90 mmHg or more.
- The higher one wins
- Where the systolic and diastolic fall in different categories, the higher category applies. A reading of 135 over 95 is stage 2, not stage 1.
- No diastolic route to elevated
- Elevated is the only category defined by both numbers together, so a raised diastolic cannot reach it. A reading of 125 over 85 is stage 1 hypertension.
- Above 180 over 120
- Reported alongside the category as severe hypertension, the term the 2025 guideline uses in place of hypertensive urgency without acute target-organ damage.
- Not one reading
- The guideline categorizes on the average of at least two careful readings taken on at least two occasions.
What you enter
- Systolic pressure
- Diastolic pressure
