What this is
Administer the three-item AUDIT-C alcohol-use screen (Bush 1998). Each question - frequency of drinking, drinks per typical day, and frequency of six-or-more-drink occasions - is scored 0-4; Sophie Well returns the 0-12 total along with the published sex-specific positive-screen thresholds (>=4 for men, >=3 for women).
When to use it
Use AUDIT-C as a primary-care or pre-procedure screen for unhealthy alcohol use, or as a brief follow-up tool after a positive single-item screen. A positive AUDIT-C indicates the need for a structured drinking history and brief intervention; it is not by itself a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder.
