What this is
Score the APGAR on its five components - appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, respiration - at the conventional 1- and 5-minute marks (and 10-minute when indicated). Sophie Well returns the per-component breakdown and the total (0-10). Source: Apgar V, Curr Res Anesth Analg 1953.
When to use it
Use APGAR for routine newborn assessment in the delivery room and to document neonatal transition. APGAR is a snapshot of resuscitative need, not a predictor of long-term outcome; a low score triggers resuscitation steps, but neonatal resuscitation algorithms (NRP) take precedence over the score itself.
