al Naqeeb aEEG Amplitude Classification

The al Naqeeb amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) amplitude classification for neonatal encephalopathy (al Naqeeb and colleagues, Pediatrics 1999).

Example

Upper margin of the aEEG trace
20 microV
Lower margin of the aEEG trace
3 microV

Result: Moderately abnormal amplitude.

The tool opens with these values already filled in. Replace them with your own.

What the result means

Normal
Upper margin above 10 microV AND lower margin above 5 microV.
Moderately abnormal
Upper margin above 10 microV AND lower margin 5 microV or below.
Suppressed
Upper margin below 10 microV AND lower margin below 5 microV.
Not exhaustive
An upper margin of EXACTLY 10, or an upper below 10 with a lower above 5, falls in NO category.
Seizures
A SEPARATE finding, never folded in. Normal amplitude with seizures is not moderately abnormal.
Not assessed
Sleep-wake cycling is not part of this classification at all.
Scope
Device and montage dependent. NOT a therapeutic hypothermia eligibility criterion.

What you enter

  • Upper margin of the aEEG trace.
  • Lower margin of the aEEG trace.
  • Whether seizure activity was recorded.
Full field descriptions
  • Upper margin of the aEEG trace. Compared with 10 microV STRICTLY: exactly 10 falls in no published category.
  • Lower margin of the aEEG trace. Compared with 5 microV. Cannot exceed the upper margin.
  • Whether seizure activity was recorded. Optional, and reported SEPARATELY: it is never folded into the amplitude category, so a normal amplitude with seizures is not moderately abnormal.
